Egypt built the only complete studio system the Arab world has had. Studio Misr opened in 1935 with money from the man who founded Egypt's national bank, and for forty years Cairo supplied most of the films, and nearly all of the stars, that the region watched; Nasser nationalised it, Sadat's open-door economy sold it back, and a hundred features a year became a fraction of that. The films here are mostly the ones that argued with the industry rather than fed it — Chahine's railway station, the eighties street realists, and a riot filmed from inside a police truck.
