For most of the twentieth century Spanish cinema was made either around a censor or outside the country entirely — Buñuel spent his best years working in Mexico and France. The films that got made at home learned to say things sideways, which is why a beehive and a girl watching Frankenstein could be about a dictatorship. After 1975 the sideways habit stayed and the subjects opened up, and Almodóvar built an international career out of the combination.
