For most of the twentieth century the films made in Ireland were made by other people: Ardmore Studios opened in 1958 largely to host British and American productions, and a state film board did not exist until 1981, was abolished in 1987, and was restored in 1993. Everything since runs on two things at once — a tax relief that brings other countries' productions to Wicklow, and a very small number of people telling Irish stories with what is left over. The surprise is the animation studio in Kilkenny, which has four Academy Award nominations to its name.
