India makes more films than any other country and has never made them in one language, so Indian cinema is at minimum a dozen industries sharing a star system and not much else. This shelf holds two of them: the Hindi popular film, which built a three-hour form with songs and an interval that half the planet learned to read, and the parallel cinema that ran alongside it from 1955 without songs, in Bengali and Malayalam, mostly about people with no money. The last decade has added a third, because the Telugu and Tamil industries now make the films that go pan-India — a reversal nobody in Bombay predicted.
