Italy invented the postwar reset twice. Neorealism took a country with no standing studios and turned that into a method, and everything from Bombay to São Paulo to Prague later cited it by name. Then, within fifteen years, the same industry was making the most stylised films in Europe and the most disreputable genre pictures on the continent — Fellini and Antonioni upstairs, Leone and Bava in the basement, frequently on the same lot.
