South Korea is the newest major film industry on this map and it arrived almost entirely after 1996, when the censorship board lost in court and a screen quota kept domestic films on domestic screens. What followed was a decade in which the prestige film and the genre film stopped being different objects — a serial-killer procedural, a revenge thriller and a class satire all won the arguments and the awards.
