Sweden's shelf is very largely one man, and that is a fact about the twentieth century rather than about this catalog: between 1951 and 1983 Ingmar Bergman made around forty features while also running a national theatre, and more or less single-handedly made the subtitled art film a category American distributors could sell. The rest is what a small country does with a serious funding body — the 1963 reform put a levy on every ticket sold behind production, and most of Europe eventually copied it. What Sweden exports now is genre with a chill on it, plus Ruben Östlund making comfortable people extremely uncomfortable.
