City of Life and Death is a 2009 Chinese historical war drama film written and directed by Lu Chuan, his third feature. The film depicts the Battle of Nanjing and the subsequent massacre committed by the Japanese army during the Second Sino-Japanese War. Shot in black and white, it won the Golden Shell at the 2009 San Sebastian Film Festival.
