When Trumpets Fade is a 1998 HBO television film directed by John Irvin and starring Ron Eldard, Frank Whaley, Zak Orth, and Dylan Bruno. Set during the Battle of the Hurtgen Forest in World War II, the film follows Private David Manning of the 28th Infantry Division who survives the battle and unwillingly accepts a battlefield promotion to sergeant.
